About District

Virudhunagar district was carved on 15th March 1985 by trifurcation of the composite Ramanathapuram district with head quarters at Virudhunagar. The total geographical area of the district is 4243 Sq. Km. The district is bounded on the west by Kerala State, on the north by Madurai and Sivaganga district, on the east by Ramanathapuram district and on the south by Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. Sivakasi is a big industrial centre in Virudhunagar district. Sivakasi is well known all over India for its industries like Fire works, Match Industries, Printing Industries. In fact the whole country depends on Sivakasi for its supply of fire works and matches. The Andal Thirukkovil - Srivilliputur, Irukkankudi Mariamman Temple - Sattur, Boominathar temple and birth place of Ramana Maharishi - Thiruchuli, Srinivasaperumalkoil (Thenthiruppathi) - Srivilliputur and Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple - Aruppukottai are some of the important Pilgrims Centres. The Memorial house of Kamarajar at Virudhunagar, Pilavakkal Dam near Watrap, Ayyanar falls - 15 km from Rajapalayam, Shenbagathoppu - Alagarkoil near Srivilliputur, Sastha Koil – Near Thevathanam, Rajapalayam are some of the important tourist centres in the District.
