"Sivasagar"-Earlier known as "Rangpur", the historical city of Assam is situated 363 K.M. east of Guwahati, the capital of Assam. Earlier Sivasagar was the capital of the mighty Ahoms, who ruled Assam for more than six hundred years before the advent of the British. The most remarkable landscape of the town is the 200 year old Sibsagar tank. The district is situated between between 94.25 and 95.25 Longitude East and 21.45 and 27.15 Latitude North. It has elevation of 86.6 Mtrs above the main sea level. The district is bounded on east by Dibrugarh District, Jorhat District on west, Bramhaputra on north and Nagaland & Arunachal Pradesh on south. Modern Sibsagar is a fast developing urban settlement. It is the headquarters of the district Sibsagar, a leading tea and oil producing centre. The district is divided into 3 Sub Divisions, 6 Revenue Circles, 881 Revenue Villages and 9 Development Blocks. The important places in the District to visit are Rang Ghar, Tolatol Ghar, Kareng Ghar & Talatal Ghar, Gargaon Palace, Charaideo, Jaysagar Tank and Temples, Gaurisagar Tank and Temples, Rudrasagar Tank and Temples, Namdang Stone Bridge, Siva Doul and Tai Museum.
